Midwifery

I attend births as a student midwife under the supervision of a licensed midwife. The knowledge I am gaining through my apprenticeships is an important component of my training to become a home-birth midwife, God Willing!

As a future midwife, my mission is to provide traditional and science-backed quality midwifery services that are accessible to women of all socioeconomic statuses.

With every birth I attend, I become more and more convinced that women are highly impacted by their birth experiences. We may not remember the names of all our children at the drop of a hat (LOL!), but we certainly remember what it felt like for each of our beloved babies to slip from our bodies and be placed in our arms for the first time. I am getting chills writing this and remembering... Why do I remember those moments so well?! They mattered. They were moments of triumph. There were moments of spiritual elation. My most enjoyed birth experience (don't get me wrong, the rest were great, just more mixed with other emotions too...) was with my daughter Hope. What made it so special was the level of care I received during my pregnancy and through my birth. That level of care is what I plan to make standard for my clients. She trusted me when I said what I needed, fed me well at my birth, provided consistent and dependable support as she committed to from the beginning, she honored my beliefs and sensitivities (to the extent that she, without being asked, wore hijab to my birth), and made sure my husband had the opportunity to catch our baby.

Sadly, hospital births, no matter how much the providers care for moms and work to protect the sanctity of birth, they, due to how the system and environment they work in are designed, deny women of key elements their bodies need to allow the birth sequence to unfold most naturally.

When I started out on the path to becoming a midwife I wanted to save women from having to experience any type of "birth trauma". I know now that

my job isn't to shield women from what God has planned for them, for I know that it is always for a good reason, and besides I could never accomplish that... My job is to show up fully in support of women having choice, giving them compassionate care, and feeling at peace with the experience that they are meant to have. Being the loving woman in the background feeling and saying when things are normal "You are strong and you are doing this right even if it feels challenging...", "Where can I be of service to you?", and when you need to make a decision "What info can I provide you with that will help this decision making process feel complete?". I also ask myself, "What can I do to make this birth environment calm and safe". If things don't go as planned, I remain there expressing my belief that you haven't failed, and supporting you to make the pivot with calm integrity and foresight to put together a plan B with you that feels good.

psst...

I love talking about this stuff!

Every conversation I have with a woman tends to expand her confidence in her ability to give birth naturally, and expand the options she thought were available to her. Providing for her the supportive mentor that she needs to walk beside her through a process that she may not have seen another woman in her life successfully achieve before.
